Ray is best known for his assemblages. The first impression one has in viewing the boxes is their consummate craftsmanship. They are exquisitely fabricated. Every detail is considered with the greatest of discernment. One has the feeling that no single ingredient can be removed or shifted without destroying the perfect balance between the various components. There is a definite adventurousness about the work. Ray never knows exactly how it will look when finished. It’s like starting a journey with no particular destination in mind. Each piece introduces the next each element indicates what must follow. There is a feeling of rightness and inevitability about his decisions. He arrives at that point when anything else would not only be superfluous, but also would immediately and totally undo that sense of balance and poised tension evident in all his work.
